AVK products in a biogas process

Biogas for a greener future

A renewable energy source made from organic waste is called biogas. We can stop methane from releasing into the atmosphere and lower greenhouse gas emissions overall by collecting and using biogas. AVK is pleased to contribute to the activity of green energy by providing valves for biogas applications, as biogas is anticipated to play a significant role in this process.

What is a biogas?

Anaerobic digestion, a biological process that occurs naturally and is similar to what happens in a cow's stomach, that produces biogas, a renewable energy source. Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) make up the majority of biogas, with trace amounts of other gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and water vapor. Typically, the process of producing biogas involves the breakdown of organic materials in the absence of oxygen, including sewage, animal manure, food waste, and agricultural waste.

Benefits of using biogas?

According to WBA, biogas has the potential to provide millions of jobs and reduce global climate emissions by 10%. And biogas has clear advantages for the environment and the economy:

  • Renewable and sustainable: it comes from continuously developed organic waste materials
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions where methane - a strong greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, is released when organic waste breaks down in landfills or is not handled. This can be avoided by collecting and using biogas.
  • Waste management: the amount of garbage is decreased by turning organic waste into biogas.
  • Decentralized production of energy is especially advantageous in rural areas and other places where traditional energy sources are limited.
  • Digestate, a byproduct of anaerobic digestion is rich in nutrients and can be used to enhance soil health and produce for agriculture.
  • Job opportunity: The generation and application of biogas leads to job openings in waste management, construction, agriculture, and energy sector.

AVK Valves and accessories for all stages in the process

Biogas process - from waste to gas

A. Preparation

Handling and preparation of different types of organic materials for biogas plant. Liquid manure, agricultural waste, organic household waste materials, and food industry waste are a few examples of input materials. The fermentation process will vary depending on the type of organic matter, which has an impact on the biogas production process. It is standard procedure to have several preparation tanks to guarantee a constant biomass composition for consistent and reliable gas production.

AVK standard product offer for this application are:

  1. Knife gate valve
  2. Resilient seated gate valve
  3. Check valve
  4. Repair clamps

B. Production

After the biomass has been prepared, it is put into  reactor tank, where anaerobic digestion produces biogas. At this point, the generated gas is mostly made up of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) with trace amounts of water (H2O) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as well. When hydrogen sulfide is present in large quantities, it can be hostile.

AVK standard product offer for this application are:

  1. Resilient seated gate valve
  2. Knife gate valve

C. Distribution

The gas produced during the anaerobic digestion process is cleaned of hydrogen sulfide. After that, the gas can be used on-site to generate warmth or electricity. As an alternative, the gas might go through additional purification procedures to raise its quality to a point where it can be sent to the natural gas network.

AVK standard product offer for this application are:

  1. Resilient seated gate valve
  2. Repair clamps
  3. PE ball valves
